Our "Camping Courtesy" series provides tips for keeping the environment clean, leaving no trace, and respecting other campers and wildlife while camping.

Keeping your campsite clean is important, and washing your dishes properly is a key part of that. However, many campers struggle with figuring out the best way to wash their dishes while camping. Whether you're a lavish glamper or a rugged tent-er, we've compiled some tips and tricks for you.

If you're camping without grey water connections, you'll want to avoid filling your RV sink with water and subsequently filling your grey tank too quickly. To avoid this, we recommend keeping the bulk of dishwashing outside when possible to save room in your grey tank. Washing dished outside is easy and keeps food and water messes out of the camper, a win-win.

Before you head out, make sure you have the right equipment on hand.

You'll need:

  • a pot for boiling water,
  • a camp stove,
  • a collapsible sink or plastic basin,
  • biodegradable soap,
  • a wash cloth, and
  • a scrubbing pad.

When it comes to where to wash your dishes, it's important to avoid washing them under water taps or in comfort stations. These areas are not meant for dish-washing, and can create safety hazards and frustrations for other campers. Instead, always clean your dishes on your campsite using a basin, and dispose of the water responsibly.

To clean your dishes, start by scraping all food residue into your garbage container or bag. Then, boil some water and mix it with cold water to create the hottest water you can safely tolerate. Pour the water into your basin or sink, and add your soap. Concentrated biodegradable camping soap only requires a few drops to be effective.

After washing each dish, rinse it with clean, cool water and set it on a clean surface. When you're finished washing all your dishes, rinse them all one more time and let the soapy residue drip into the sink or basin.

Finally, it's time to dispose of your "grey" water or soapy water. Make sure there is no food residue in the water, and then safely dispose of it at the trailer sanitation station or by pouring it down the vault toilets.

By following these tips and washing your dishes in an eco-friendly and responsible way, you're doing your part to help protect the parks we all love. Great work!
